“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 NIV
There is an amazing connection between the hearts of men and their physical treasures; treasures I mean, that are in terms of material possessions, physical assets, properties and money etc.
Treasures are easily attached to the heart, which means having a strong hold onto the heart of the owner. The attachment can be so strong that the bond between the one who has acquired the treasures and the treasures will be inseparable; and the heart will continue to worry on the sustainance, maintenance and the security of the treasures, therefore, the heart becomes fixed on the treasures.
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be and where your heart is, is where all your commitment, devotion and energy will be directed.
There was a young rich man who was so attached to his earthly possessions that it became difficult for him to lay the possessions down for the Lord – Matthew 19:21-22. “Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.”
The heart of man both physical and spiritual is very important. Biblically the heart is the spiritual part of man where the emotions and desires dwell therefore the heart is the core of our being and God desires to dwell in our hearts always and so much. God cannot have a place in the heart of a man that is attached to the things of the earth because the heart of the man is occupied with his earthly treasures already.
There are two great places where treasures can be acquired and stored up: In Heaven and on Earth. While one is permanent, the other is temporal.
You are the determinant of where you want your treasures to be. It is good and great to have physical and material possessions here on earth but it is best and greatest to have treasures and valuables up in Heaven.
We need to understand that we are here on earth for just a little while, and when we die, we exit and all the treasures on earth are left behind to be used or misused by someone who lacks the understanding of how the treasures were acquired in the first place.
But the treasures stored up in Heaven are to be enjoyed by you for eternity, where there are no thieves or anything to destroy them.
So therefore, why not choose to lay up treasures in Heaven. How can we lay up treasures in heaven you may be wondering. The scripture has spoken to us in the many verses in the word of God that our choice to be obedient to the commandments of God, loving the Lord; witnessing to lost souls; by giving to the needy; commitment to the the kingdom assignment and projects and also by fulfilling God’s purpose for your life and all the Lord has told us to be and do.
You cannot be devoted and committed to kingdom of God and your heart will at the same time be attached to the things of the earth. No! Your heart will be fixed on God.
What kind of treasures are you acquiring, is it the earthly or heavenly treasures? and where are you storing them up. Choose wisely!
