The Great Light

“the people who sat in darkness saw a great Light; and to them that sat in the region and shadow of death, Light has sprung up.” ~ Matt 4:16

The difference between light and darkness is unfathomable and immeasurable. You can not have light and wish for darkness at the same time, because light is clean, beautiful and full of an enjoyable peace.
Light is defined by the Collins English Dictionary as “the brightness that lets you see things”. I love this definition, the Merriam webstar also defines light as “something that makes vision possible”. From these two definitions we see the power of light, that it gives the ability to see and opens the sight to behold things.
Darkness on the other hand is defined as the partial or total absence of light, therefore darkness only prevails when light is absent but when light appears it totally disappears, no wonder the book of John 1:5 says “And the Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.”.

Darkness cannot stay when light appears, it will surely take a bow and disappear.

When you live in the region that I come from, you would have a bit of understanding of what darkness is and its negative impact on the Nation. Now am a Nigerian and am referring to the man made light which is the electricity that is meant to be available to all the citizens of the Nation but Majority of the states and cities in Nigeria suffers from total power blackout and that means no electricity supply for months or even years. This has caused great setbacks and unproductivity to some parts of the Nation. Things do not work well and accordingly which results to high cost of living to the people. Darkness never does or bring about anything good but only comes with sadness and total pain to wherever it is allowed.
When it comes to spiritual darkness, it is nothing but evil, wickedness, blindness, agony and disorderliness. Darkness is used as a symbol of sin in the Scriptures. “… , and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” ~ John 3:19b and Eph 5:11 says “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”. Darkness in these scripture verses speaks of “deeds of evil” “unfruitful works” which are the works of anyone in darkness.

Jesus speaks about a people who sat in the darkness in Matthew 4:16. Jesus was actually quoting from the book of Isaiah 9:1~2. While Isaiah spoke of the people he said “they were walking in darkness”, but when the time of Jesus came, the people had become so comfortable in darkness that he mentioned that the people were sitting in it. Today, we see people doing terrible things without any bad conscience against what they have done or even feel remorseful, we see evil works becoming rampant. Therefore, walking or sitting in darkness is either by choice or by ignorance. Good works cannot come from darkness except by the power of the great light.

WHY DO PEOPLE WALK OR SIT IN DARKNESS.

In as much as darkness has no good but evil in it or from it, alot of people are walking and some are sitting so comfortably in it. Sin is a major cause of spiritual darkness. Jesus says “He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness” {John 8:12}. To accept and follow Jesus Christ is the only way out of spiritual darkness therefore some are in darkness:

BY IGNORANCE ~ Ignorance means lack of information, knowledge or understanding. The Bible says “They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.” Ephesians 4:18.
Some people today are separated from the life of God and are blind to the things of the Kingdom because they allow darkness to darken their understanding about God, the word of God is foolishness to such persons due to the hardening of their hearts. But when the entrance of the Light of God is allowed, then they begin to see the world from God’s view.
Ignorance keeps a man walking or sitting in darkness when he refuses to seek or accept knowledge or information about His God and creator – “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge…” Hosea 4:6. Do not reject or harden your heart to the word of God, in it you will find life and purpose.

BY CHOICE ~ We have the free will to do and chose as it seems right to us, we are also responsible for the choices we make whether good or bad. Some situations and circumstances can also influence our choices but we are still responsible for making the choices. But my prayer right now is that you would make the right choices in life in Jesus mighty name .
Some chose to remain in darkness because of the wickedness of their heart and they use darkness to perpetuate evil and do unfruitful works. One of the ways the devil keeps a man in darkness is to blind his eyes of understanding, no wonder Apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesians in chapter 1 and verse 18. The devil does not want man to see the glorious light of God in Christ Jesus: 2 Cor 4:4 says “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
One of the right choice is to come into the light of Jesus and allow His light to illuminate and shine upon you.

Jesus Is the Great Light
“Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” – John 8:12
Jesus is the Light of God and the true light of the world and this is his heart cry to all the world to know this Truth and follow Him. Only in his light are we able to journey through this world and be fulfilled. When you read biographies or autobiographies of some great men and women who have attained great successes in life, most of them do acknowledge having an emptiness in their hearts even with all the achievements they have or had, most die unfulfilled and incomplete. It is a known fact that Money can not fulfill man, neither does family nor children; material things cannot fulfill a man as well; completion and fulfillment is found only in Christ Jesus.

Darkness is transparent to Christ:
“Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” – Psalms 139:12
There is no dark act, habit or attitude that is hidden from the presence of the Great Light. Darkness and light are the same before. No man can hide from him. The man Jonah in the book of Jonah when called by God for an assignment to the land of Nineveh, fled from God to Tarshish believing he could hide from God but easily was he picked out during the storm from the ship to Tarshish. Evil is transparent before God, all the works of men are clearly seen by God.
When a man wants to do acts of wickedness, he looks at his right, his left, to the front and the back to see if any one will see him but he always forgets to look up, where he whom darkness is not hidden from His sight.

Chose Light
The people of the land of Zabulon and Nephthalim in the book of Matthew chapter 4 decided and chose to see the great light and the light sprung up and shined upon them and they were saved from darkness and from the shadow of death. Make the right choice today and allow the true light of Jesus to shine upon you and follow him so as to stop walking in darkness. He who follows Jesus shall have the light of life and darkness cannot overcome him.

Make the right choice today.

Pray the following prayers:
Today, I receive Jesus Christ as my Personal Lord and Savior and I chose to follow him

I receive the grace to see the true light and be saved from the works of darkness

Every power of darkness operating against my life, I overcome by the blood of Jesus

Thank you Jesus for shining your light upon my life.
